The cars are pretty much exactly what you'd guess from the photo...scraps of lumber from a box in the garage, with pieces of plywood drilled and screwed on to make wheels. The hole in the centre of each wheel is larger than the screw, so the wheel turns freely. Hubby has carved a couple of them to look more car-like, but for the most part, they're just rectangles.
I love that even now, when we are surrounded by the manic commercialism of Christmas and the pending arrival of Santa, my boys love these simple toys. Yes, the cars could be more refined, or painted more carefully, but the kids feel so empowered when they make these that I wouldn't have them any other way. And as a bonus for Mama, the boys will sometimes play cars nicely together for up to an hour at a time!

Yeah a handmade gift under the tree! I think it is so great that your husband made these with the boys help. They are precious and will be keepsakes as well. You could even carve the year under the body in the future, or as a licence plate:)
