My Husband Had An Affair & Broke My Heart

It's hard to believe it has been almost a year since I've posted to this blog. I used to enjoy reading other blogs and posting my own projects, but last year, life started to go wrong. This is hard to write about (and my apologies, there's nothing crafty here), but I feel I need to release it.

First, while still pregnant with my third son, a lump I've had in my neck started to grow aggressively. I was scanned and tested and biopsied, and am now waiting for a (presumed) cancer removal surgery in July. It's a lot to process for a mother of young children, but I am hopeful.
In October, my third son was finally born a couple weeks past due. During a routine ultrasound and biophysical profile, he was found to have a heartbeat, but was completely non-responsive (flaccid, no movement, no breath attempts)and was born via emergency induction. I called my husband to say the baby had to come out right now, and could he please come to the hospital. He didn't seem excited about the prospect, but I put it down to stress. It was an excruciating birth full of anxiety, as the outcome for my son was unknown. Thankfully, he arrived safe and sound -- a little smaller than my other boys despite being overdue -- but in seemingly good health. He's a great baby, and I love him to pieces.

Then, there is the matter of my husband, a man I thought was my best friend and someone I could always count on. I was terribly wrong. We had been having some marital strain since after he took an extended business trip August, but we pulled things together in December and had a fantastic holiday. I was in love all over again.
Little did I know hubby joined a dating website called Plenty of Fish back in August after cheating on me while away on his supposed business trip. On Jan. 3rd, he got a response to his ad. A local woman, a mother who was cheating on her partner, contacted my husband. He had drinks with her a day or two later, and he had sex with her two days after that in the back of her truck, along a dark road in the middle of a freezing Ottawa winter. Of course, I knew none of this. I'd had suspicions, but he always denied everything, told me I was acting ridiculously jealous, and to stop playing mind games with him. Eight days after his first online contact with this 'woman', he broke up with me in the middle of the night as I nursed our newborn. He said some really ugly things...things I can never have my children know.

He said he wanted more than work and 'parenting', and that he was leaving me to pursue those things. To say I was devastated would be a huge understatement. I felt empty, shocked, betrayed, anchorless. Of course he neglected to tell me he'd been having sex with someone else. That came out later, along with revelations that he's been having emotional affairs online for years, and that he bought condoms in case he 'had sex accidently' with some woman he met while out running during his last 'business' trip. He also admitted to drug use, secret friends, and other things. Who was this man?

Over the course of the next two months, I had to endure him trying to buy a house behind my back, paralyzing me financially, listening to him on the phone declaring his love for her, calling me a whore and other names (the irony!) and watching him go out to spend nights and days with her. He was obnoxious about it. He even called the police on me one night because I followed him on his way to see her (he took in my car without permission) after they had supposedly broken up. I felt broken and defeated. At some point, he admitted he had lied about using condoms, and revealed he had been having unprotected sex with her. Although he claims it didn't 'occur' to him, that meant my baby and I had been exposed to whatever STDs she might have. My sweet, innocent baby boy won't get a clean bill of health until he's two years old. There were times the man I married was with both me and her intimately within hours of each other (he kept a log of most of their sexual exploits, which he later sent to me). I couldn't believe this was my life. It still makes me sick to think about his choices.

We tried to hash out separation details. We would agree to certain things, like trying to allow the kids to stay in our house instead of selling it, visitation, etc., and then the next day after he spoke to her, he would renege on all of it. She desperately wanted him to sell the house.

Finally, one day near the end of February, I heard him crying upstairs in the bathroom. As much as I hated all he had done to me, I still loved him and so I went up to comfort him. It was incredibly difficult, and I felt ill talking to him about her. But I did it. My compassion didn't seem to have an impact. The following night he sent her an email stating she was the best thing ever in his life, the most amazing love making of his life, that he was bound to her forever, and that maybe he should try to take some time to calm me down to make the separation go easier so they could be together again in a month or so. He said he could still see her during the day, but no more overnights. Thirteen or so hours after he sent that bit of vileness, he came to me and said he'd made a terrible mistake, still loved me and our kids, wanted to save our family, etc.

This sudden turnaround seemed suspect to me, but he seems to have seen the error of his ways and corrected his behaviour. We have been going to couples counselling. Is it enough? I don't know. I'm incredibly hurt by his many betrayals (there is so much more than I have written here), and I resent both him and her.  I don't trust him and have very little respect for him as a man right now. I worry about the kind of example my kids will have -- particularly if my health fails further. I love him in a deep place in my heart, but all the little feelings of affection I used to have -- that flutter when he walked into a room, the urge to hold his hand or kiss him or touch him in passing, the feeling of having a solid best friend -- that's all gone, and I wonder if it can ever come back.

So that's why I haven't been posting. Surviving this betrayal and upheaval has taken literally every ounce of energy I have. I want and need to get myself back, to start doing the things I love doing again, so hopefully I will have more positive things to post in the future. Thanks for reading.

Sad News

Yesterday brought some sad news. One of my cousins passed away in his sleep early Saturday morning. Like me, he was in his mid-thirties, and seemingly in good health except for being overweight. His unexpected death has been a grim reminder that even 'young' people can't take their health and longevity for granted. It's time to make changes.

Rest in Peace, Trevor.

Mmm, Corn Dogs

When we have treats in our house, they usually come in the form of dessert. The other night, however, I was at a loss for what to make for dinner, when I spotted an email from allrecipes.com touting a recipe for corn dogs. I happened to have part of a package of wieners in the fridge left over from Canada Day weekend, so I thought I'd toss healthy eating to the wind for one night and give these a shot. Oh my goodness, they were delicious, on top of being fast and easy to make.

I only had three wieners left in the package, so I cut each one in half, and stuck in a popsicle stick. I mixed up half the batter recipe (using a whole egg, because I couldn't divide that in half), and dumped the batter into a drinking glass to make it easy to dunk the wieners. A quick fry in peanut oil (sticks and all), and the corn dogs were done. My kids devoured them, and I added some salad on the side to assuage any mommy guilt I may have felt about the questionable nutritional content of dinner.

Corn Dogs (from allrecipes.com)

Ingredients

1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup white sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 egg
1 cup milk
1 quart vegetable oil for frying
2 (16 ounce) packages beef frankfurters
16 wooden skewers
Directions

In a medium bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, sugar and baking powder. Stir in eggs and milk.
Preheat oil in a deep saucepan over medium heat. Insert wooden skewers into frankfurters. Roll frankfurters in batter until well coated.
Fry 2 or 3 corn dogs at a time until lightly browned, about 3 minutes*. Drain on paper towels.

* My corn dogs cooked for barely a minute, instead of the three called for in the recipe. I broke my cooking thermometre last time I used it, so maybe my oil was hotter than I thought, but just keep an eye on them when you're cooking, and you'll see when they're done.

***************

Changing gears, I have some exciting news. Narelle from Cook Clean Craft has invited me to be a guest blogger next week as part of her Boy's Own Style series.

Boys own style

Check me out there July 9th, as well as the other great guest posters who will be sharing their best boy clothing ideas throughout the month.

Handmade Gift Exchange

Wow, the month of June has flown by in the blink of an eye. And that means the deadline for the Handmade Gift Exchange going on over at Craftaholics Anonymous is just about upon us. Well, for me it was today since the post office isn't open this long weekend.
Add my usual procrastination to orders to rest after I had bleeding and contractions at 25 weeks, and it's a miracle I finished at all, but my exchange partner will be getting this summery market tote. The second shot is truer to the real colour. I had, literally, only 15 minutes to get to the post office, so photography was not on top of the priority list!

Since I was home, I sent hubby to the store for yarn. He didn't come back with the green I had in mind, but I added a strand of cream from my stash, and it didn't turn out badly. This wasn't the project I originally wanted to make, but under the circumstances, it was something I could do easily from the couch, so I hope by exchange partner likes it anyway.

On that note, the baby seems to be staying put after our scare, and I'm starting to feel more like getting out of the house. I spent a couple hours at Ikea with my boys today, and, it turns out, that was too much, so I'll be taking it easy for a while longer.

Happy Canada Day to all my Canadian friends, both bloggy and real!

Spiderman Light

Before my first son was born, I bought a couple little wall sconces from Ikea to light his room softly at night. When son #2 came along, one of the two sconces migrated to his room. The design is a very basic pale blue with moon and stars. Fine for little kids, but my big guy (I'm almost SIX, Mama!)decided he would much rather have a Spiderman light fixture.

With son #3 well on his way, which likely means needing a bigger vehicle to fit everyone, our budget is really tight right now. We just don't have the cash to replace a perfectly good light with another perfectly good light. That said, I figured a trip to the Dollarama couldn't hurt. There, I found some neat Spiderman window decals. I popped out the old moon and stars sconce cover, and added Spiderman to the front. The result was okay, but the light bulb was shining through pretty brightly without the cover in front of it. I thought adding paper to the inside (where the old cover was) might be a fire hazard, but hubby came up with the idea of using a scrap of window screen to filter the light. Perfect. Love when he's cute AND smart (=

Josh knows he didn't get a new light, but he's happy it's not so babyish as the old version.

********

Remember when I posted about participating in Kids' Clothing Week a while back?. It was a bust. Not a single finished outfit, and one night, I was so tired, I actually fell asleep at my sewing machine long before my hour was up. On the bright side, I have a few projects that did get started, so hopefully we'll see them soon. Soonish.

Despite my KCW fail, I've joined the Handmade Gift Exchange being hosted over at Craftaholics Anonymous. There's a hard and fast mailing deadline of three weeks from now, so best get to it!

I've been stalking my receiving partner a little, looking for ideas, but I have no idea who will be gifting to me. I hope she's not stalking my lack of posts lately...I'm pretty boring right now!

Doll Quilt and Pillow

I've been into a little early Christmas gift making this year. Some of the little girls in my life will be receiving these miniature doll quilts with matching pillows.
(Sorry, I still haven't figured out how to stop my phone photos from cutting themselves off on one side.)
I love these little sets. They are made almost entirely with scraps, so are budget friendly, and they're quick to make. And, I think they're pretty adorable, too.
This one is a basic patchwork quilt, about 18 inches square. I cheated on the binding by just folding the backing over to the front. There are only two lines of quilting. Keeping it simple! The pillow is a rectangle of folded, sewed and stuffed fabric -- again, nothing fancy, but I remember loving this sort of thing when I was a kid. Feels like so long ago.

Bedtime Book Sling

My oldest son and I have gotten into the habit of reading a few chapters of a big-kid book together each night before bed.

Unfortunately, his books would end up all over the dresser or the floor. So last night I found a piece of denim-y canvas-y type fabric and stitched it into a nifty book swing. It attaches to his bunk bed with snaps.

I was going to make a full tutorial, but really, this is just a rectangle of fabric with the long edges hemmed and short ends stitched together. The strap were stitched on last, with a single snap added to each one. I was afraid that the sling might sag in the middle, so I stitched two lines through the rectangle to create three separate pockets. It works brilliantly

Sorry about the wonky and fuzzy pictures. They're from my phone and aren't orienting properly for some reason (you should be able to see the whole sling, not just parts of it!). Could be because I'm learning to post from my phone, too. Live and learn!

It's That Time of Year: KCWC

One of my favourite blogs is elsie marley. And one of my favourite things about this blog is what is called Kids Clothing Week Challenge. The challenge is to spend an hour a day, for one week, working on sewing clothing for children. Fun, right?
I only have one specific project in mind for this challenge, and that's a little sundress for a friend's baby daughter, but I'm sure my own boys will be getting something, too.

Thread Holder for my Sewing Room

I have spools of thread all over my house -- which makes it hard to find what I need. There's a small plastic holder in my sewing room, but it doesn't seem to hold larger spools. They always pop off and roll across the floor.
Solution? Grab a piece of plywood from the garage, staple some fabric to it, and direct hubby to pound on a nail every two inches. Let the kids watch and call it craft time. (:
We used a drill to screw in a couple holes and mounted it right next to my sewing table. So handy! Small word of caution...careful when drilling through the fabric so that it doesn't tear (lesson learned!). It would be best to drill the mounting holes prior to covering the board with fabric.
I love it!

Curtain Rod Quick Fix

My dining room has two narrow windows, dressed with panels on rods top and bottom and cinched in the middle with a band of fabric. Simple and nice enough, but my boys are forever pulling at the panels and bending the flimsy little rods. A few months ago, one of the rods broke and has been left unfixed since then.

With company coming for Easter dinner tomorrow, it was past time to remedy that situation. I didn't have a spare rod so thought of what I thought is a fairly clever replacement. Seriously, I was so proud of myself...hubby just rolled his eyes at me.

Tada! An elastic band. I used a paper clip to thread the elastic through the curtain rod channel. It worked, cost less than a penny, and did I mention how tickled I was? Feel free to join my hubby eye rolling now. (:

Happy Easter and Passover to everyone celebrating this week.

Knitting Needle Roll for Me

I'm finally starting to feel a little less likely to throw up every half hour, so thought I'd celebrate with starting a new knitting project. That lead me to a couple hours spent browsing on Ravelry, and finally a decision on this cute little shrug. I have a feeling this baby might be a girl, but until I know for sure, this shrug will be for a friend's little girl.

After all that, I realized I never posted about the new knitting needle roll I made for myself. My knitting needles were a mess -- scattered across every room, some left in abandoned project (some so old I don't even remember what I was making!), and so a solution was necessary.

I took enough photos for a tutorial, and will get that posted soon, but for now, here's a look at my sanity-saving knitting needle roll:

The fabric was from a cheap Walmart fat quarter bundle that I had in my stash. It wrinkles a bit, but overall, I have to say I love this roll, and feel so much more organized now.

Thursday, February 16, 2012

I've been on a real break lately from crafting, blogging and even reading other blogs. I enjoyed the holidays with my little family, but haven't been able to get back into a crafty groove since January. Or a housekeeping groove. Or even a cooking groove for that matter (thank goodness for all the pre-made lasagnas, meatballs, shepherd's pie etc. I had stashed in the freezer!). I felt tired all the time and figured I was grappling with some seasonal blues.

Turns out though, that I've just been super crafty...

It's still early (I'm not one of those wait-until-12-weeks-to-tell kind of girls), but if all goes well, my family will be welcoming a new little boy or girl sometime in October.

Now THAT will definitely get me crafting again!

Silhouette Dust Cover -- Char & Melanie Style!

Quite a while back, I saw that Char, from Crap I've Made, posted a tutorial for a Silhouette Dust Cover. I got excited and promptly forgot. Then, more recently, Melanie from The Crafty Cupboard, posted her version, which boasted a Velcro-closure pocket to store the extra blades. Brilliant!

So I got to work on this very fast project, and voila!

Isn't it cute?

Here you can see the pocket a little better. It's a bit lumpy because it's already loaded with the spare blades. My camera battery died at this point, so no more detailed photos. You can see I chose to use snaps instead of Velcro. I picked up a snap press off of Kijiji a couple months ago, and since then, I stalk my home looking for things to which I can add snaps. Kids' hat straps too big? Snap 'em! Dish towels falling off the stove handle? No more. Velcro coming loose on the dog's coat? Pfft! Snaps to the rescue. My husband thinks my admiration for this tool is a bit unhealthy, but I love it.

Last Minute Christmas Pajamas

It's become my little family's tradition to have Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve, and then relax with leftovers and treats on Christmas Day. Last night, with my tummy full of turkey and trimmings and the dishes still undone, I decided we all needed matching pajamas -- before bedtime!

So with hubby and the boys snuggled up to watch a decidedly un-Christmas-y Star Trek movie, I headed down to my sewing machine to whip up some cozy flannel PJs. I didn't take any formal photos, but you can sort of see them in our photos from this morning.

The boys each got flannel pants and an appliqued t-shirt, while hubby and I made do with flannel pants and unadorned tees. The applique was a simple tree shape. The print is purple plaid, so it's Christmas-y without being in-your-face Christmas-y, and I think the boys will be happy to wear these for months. One last bit -- it's hard to see in the photo above, but I added a little lace edging to the leg bottoms of my pants, just to make them a little more girlish.

I hope you all had a blessed Christmas.

Handmade Toys for Boys -- wooden cars

This project is actually courtesy of my husband. He's not a particularly crafty fellow, but he does like tools, and my boys do, too. These handmade cars are a bit rustic, to say the least, but my kids love helping Daddy make them, and they take great pride in painting them just how they want them.

The cars are pretty much exactly what you'd guess from the photo...scraps of lumber from a box in the garage, with pieces of plywood drilled and screwed on to make wheels. The hole in the centre of each wheel is larger than the screw, so the wheel turns freely. Hubby has carved a couple of them to look more car-like, but for the most part, they're just rectangles.

I love that even now, when we are surrounded by the manic commercialism of Christmas and the pending arrival of Santa, my boys love these simple toys. Yes, the cars could be more refined, or painted more carefully, but the kids feel so empowered when they make these that I wouldn't have them any other way. And as a bonus for Mama, the boys will sometimes play cars nicely together for up to an hour at a time!

Merry Christmas!

Train Christmas Stocking

One of my favourite parts of Christmas festivities is opening stockings with my family. I also love making Christmas stockings, so when our local playgroup was looking for items to donate for an auction, I offered up two custom made stockings. The auction winner asked for a stocking like this one (sorry, I don't know the source):

Which turned into this stocking:

Each piece was drawn and cut freehand, and then fused to the stocking with Heat-n-Bond Ultra. I stitched around some of the areas, like the windows for accent and security, but I'm pretty sure this will never come apart.

In case I don't get around to posting again before the big day, Merry Christmas to all!

241 Tote

A friend recently asked me to sew up a couple bags for her mom. It seemed the perfect opportunity to try out the 241 Tote that I bought ages ago. It turned out nicely, although I was working in a sleep deprived state, and put the side panels on with the accent fabric on the inside rather than the outside. Oops!
I also made a simple, lined shopping bag to go with it.
Overall, I think it's a cute and practical gift, and I have plans to make a more modern version of the 241 tote for myself after Christmas. I have a few more projects I'd like to complete before Christmas, so hopefully will have more to show soon.

Glass Etching for Christmas

I haven't posted many of the Christmas gifts I've been working on, but my father- and mother-in-law flew into town over the weekend and we exchanged gifts, so showing my first attempt at glass etching won't ruin any surprises.
This was SO EASY to do! I used my old Silhouette and some dollar store contact paper to make a stencil, stuck it to the side of a new Pyrex baking pan with lid, and painted on a good coating of glass etching cream. I waited about 20 minutes, rinsed off the cream, pulled off the adhesive stencil, washed the pan and done. It isn't perfect, as you can see in the second K pictured above, but I will be making more of these for Christmas gifts and later on just for fun. I chose a 9 x 13 inch pan and found making a stencil with lettering that spanned an 1.5 x 10 inch area worked nicely. I etched "Made with love in" on one side of the pan, and "Kimberly's Kitchen" on the other side. The font is Subway. It's official: I love etching cream!

Handmade Gift Exchange: sent & received!

One of the things I enjoy most about the holidays is exchanging gifts with loved ones. And now, thanks to the Winter 2011 edition of the Handmade Gift Exchange at Craftaholics Anonymous, you can add exchanging gifts with strangers to that list as well!
My exchange partner was Ana, a Brazilian woman who moved to Manitoba after marrying her Canadian husband. Brr, I think I may have tried to persuade hubby to move to Brazil instead. Ana blogs at Tropical Momma -- check her out there or on Facebook, where you can see more of her Custom Art!
In any case, Ana said she liked the colour leaf green, so I went through my stash and found some leafy green yarn (I actually went to a friend's house and matched it against some of her houseplants!), and knitted up a little scarfette. You've seen this pattern from me before here. It's one of my favourite patterns to make.
Ana also has a young daughter, so I made her a quick crayon and notepad roll. I keep one of these in my bag for use in waiting rooms, restaurants, etc. Keeps the kids amused, and is easy to carry around. Hope she likes it!
And now for the really good stuff...this piece of Christmas gorgeousness is what she sent me! I love it! It arrived this morning, just in time for decorations starting to go up at our house. Thanks so much, Ana! Your work is great and I will treasure it.
